Backgrounder: Government Service Centre in Ottawa

The Government Service Centre in Ottawa City Hall represents a unique opportunity for the Government of Canada, Ontario Government and City of Ottawa to provide accessible government service to Canadians in a convenient location in downtown Ottawa.

The Government of Canada provides information on Government of Canada benefits and services through Service Canada. Canadians can contact directly the
1 800 O-Canada information line, as well as have online access to the Service Canada website (servicecanada.gc.ca) and Government of Canada forms and publications.

Through ServiceOntario, the Ontario government is making it easier for people to access Ontario government information and services online via the ServiceOntario website (www.serviceontario.ca), in person and by phone.  ServiceOntario is providing simpler, more streamlined and better-integrated services to families and businesses across the province.

The City of Ottawa provides its residents one-stop access to municipal services at all of its client service centres, including City Hall. In addition, residents can access City information and services at their fingertips – by dialing 3-1-1 to the City Contact Centre – or by visiting its website at ottawa.ca.

The presence of the federal and provincial governments adds another level of convenience to the downtown location.

The Government Service Centre is located in Ottawa City Hall at 110 Laurier Avenue West – a central location that is accessible by public transit from various points in the city. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Archives of Ontario’s inaugural exhibit

On September 15, The Honourable Harinder S. Takhar, Minister of Government Services, launched the Archives of Ontario’s inaugural exhibit in its facilities, which opened at York University this spring.  The exhibit, Ontario – On the Map, demonstrates how the purpose of early provincial maps changed from tools for settlement and exploitation of resources to tools for understanding the evolving cultural and physical landscape of Ontario.
